DEFA opts for second tender

The board of the Cyprus’ Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA) yesterday approved a second tender for the short-term supply of natural gas in Cyprus.

According to an announcement, the second tender invites proposals for the supply of natural gas to the Vassilikos power station for a period of up to ten years, commencing on January 1, 2016.

DEFA said it prepared the tender documents based on the mandate received from the cabinet, following discussions with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), and on the basis of data submitted by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA), the Energy Ministry’s Energy Service and other authorities.

Further details regarding the ‘Invitation Document’ will be announced in the Official Journal of the European Union and in the press, while detailed information will be uploaded on DEFA’s website.

Earlier in the week, DEFA head Eleni Vasiliadou said the company was working round the clock to complete the dossier for a second tender for natural gas imports to be used for domestic power generation.

The island is currently exclusively reliant on expensive heavy fuel oil for power production.

The first tender was terminated in October last year after DEFA failed to agree with any of the bidders.

Cyprus decided on a new international tender after overtures to Israel to export natural gas from the Tamar field apparently failed to bear fruit.
