Every job in this world comes with its pros and cons. Successful are those that know how to maneuver past the cons and focus on the pros. If you thought that oil gas jobs and rig jobs only have their advantages or their disadvantages then you are highly mistaken. Even these jobs will give you some positives and negatives. It is you who needs to decide whether the advantages are turn ons or the disadvantages are turn offs.
Advantages
1. Great pay – When it comes to the pay packet of oil gas jobs and rig jobs, they can compete with any industry in the world. For the same job that you do on land, your pay is hiked by a good percentage when you are offshore and working in the rig. The starting salary for the basic jobs is around $50,000 a year. Bonuses, free quarters and food add to the kitty.
2. Good career prospect – Oil gas jobs and rig jobs build a career for you. You may start as a roustabout but your hard work and dedication will soon see you move up the ladder. You also get trained at regular intervals so that you are able to learn new things that can help you build your career with the oil companies.
3. Bonhomie among the colleagues – Since you tend to see the same faces every day when you are on the job they become your extended family. You can bank on them for all your needs.
4. Good working hours – The working hours in oil gas jobs and rig jobs are just right. You are expected to put in eight hours a day and then you get ample time to relax. You also have your leaves when you can meet your family.
Disadvantages
1. Cramped living – The living quarters are not exactly penthouse suites. When you are doing oil gas jobs and rig jobs, you need to get used to cramped quarters. You will either share a room with others or even stay in a dormitory. Space is at a premium and people are given only that amount of space that they need for basic living.
2. Lack of privacy – Lack of privacy in oil gas jobs and rig jobs is one turn off for many people. You seem to share everything with your colleagues – right from your soap to your towel.
3. Away from human touch – Oil gas jobs and rig jobs are available in oil rigs that are miles away from human civilization. You need to get used to seeing the same faces every day and meeting the same people for every minute when you are awake.
If I were given a choice, I would definitely decide that the advantages of oil gas jobs and rig jobs are a turn on. As for the disadvantages, they definitely pale when compared to the advantages. And as one starts working in the oil rig, they manage to get accustomed to these disadvantages and instead build a great career for them in the oil industry.
