Cyprus signed during the Ministerial Conference on the Charter that was organized by the Government of the Netherlands and the Energy Charter Secretariat in the Hague the International Energy Charter.
The Charter was signed on behalf of Cyprus by the Cypriot ambassador to Holland Dr Kyriacos Kouros, who expressed the full support of the Republic of Cyprus to the International Energy Charter and its aims.
Kouros also said that the recent discoveries of sizeable quantities of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean requires cooperation by all countries in the region in order to demonstrate the role of the region as a new energy supply corridor for Europe, and the Charter offers the appropriate framework for this cooperation.
The International Energy Charter was adopted by 73 countries and by the European Commission.
The International Energy Charter is a political declaration that defines common principles for international cooperation in the field of energy. The International Energy Charter reconfirms and modernizes the principles of the 1991 European Energy Charter and the 1994 Energy Charter Treaty which the Republic of Cyprus ratified in 1997.
The Conference was also attended by representatives of other international organisations and included a High Level business event entitled “Investing in Energy”.
