The Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, departs today for Malta, where he will participate, heading a Ministerial delegation, in the Energy Conference on “The security of natural gas supply: the role of gas developments in the Mediterranean”, co-organized, on 10 and 11 July, by the Republic of Cyprus, the Republic of Malta and the European Commission.
The Conference will be attended, inter alia, by the Energy Commissioner of the EU, Mr Günther Oettinger, Energy Ministers of EU and Mediterranean countries and representatives of stakeholders from the public and private sectors in various countries, including the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company and the multinational companies from the hydrocarbon industry operating in Cyprus.
The Conference’s agenda includes a discussion of the role that the exploitation of domestic hydrocarbon resources within the EU can play, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean region, for the medium and long-term reinforcement of the security of the Union’s energy supply. Moreover, within the framework of the European Commission’s proposal for the creation of a Mediterranean Gas Hub, ways will be examined in which the Mediterranean could become an energy hub for the production and supply of natural gas.
