The Med may one day be more than just a destination for British holidaymakers – it could also be a storage ground for waste carbon dioxide.
Scientists from Cyprus and Scotland are working together on a “new frontier” for storing CO2 emissions from the region’s growing oil and gas sector.
Researchers from the two countries will study seismic data to identify likely geological CO2 storage sites – such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs – beneath the Mediterranean Sea.
Dr Marios Valiantis, Director of the Centre for Green Development and Energy Policy at the University of Nicosia which is working with the group Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage said: “Cyprus is getting ready for what we hope will be a big new offshore oil and gas industry.
“By developing Carbon Capture and Storage alongside the hydrocarbon industry, we aim to grow our economy without contributing to climate change.”
