The visit of US Vice President Joe Biden to Cyprus and the messages he conveyed confirm the upgraded role of Cyprus in the region, Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides said on Friday.
He added that Cyprus can act as a bridge between Europe and the East, and as a core of security, stability and cooperation in the sensitive region of South-eastern Europe.
In his address at the closing ceremony of the multinational exercise “Argonaut – 2014”, at the naval base “Evaggelos Florakis”, in the south-eastern coast of Cyprus, the Minister referred to hydrocarbon discoveries in the country`s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and noted that “this development has revived the international interest in reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem”.
