NICOSIA — The Republic of Cyprus will not terminate any of its energy plans because of Turkey’s provocations and blackmailing practices, Cyprus Defence Minister Photis Photiou has stressed.
He added that Cyprus will go on with its plans, since energy-related mattes fall within the Republic’s sovereign rights, which Nicosia will not abolish.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
The country is currently developing natural resources discovered within the Republic’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), while several international companies are involved in hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation activities.

Ankara has threatened Cyprus when Nicosia launched its exploration activities, in September 2011.
The government of Cyprus has protested to the UN and the EU Turkey’s moves, saying it has a sovereign right to exploit its natural resources.
